It doesn’t get any more NATIONAL than our upcoming Congressional Conference coming up May 22-23 in Washington, D.C. Not only are we charged with meeting with our legislators/staff and relate what NAIFA members do on Main Street America, across all 50 states, this year, we are taking care of business as well.

That is, the business that was supposed to have been taken care of at last fall’s Performance + Purpose Conference in Orlando. But, in light of the hurricanes, the NAIFA Board elected to cancel the convention rather than jeopardize any of our member’s safety. Since I presume many of you are aware of the monumental changes the NAIFA Board is suggesting relative to organizational structure from the grass roots on up, governance, dues utilization and many other issues that you will be reading about in the near future. I think most of you are aware that NAIFA is proposing to adopt the Illinois/Chicago model that NAIFA-Wisconsin has patterned our new governance structure.

As you know, doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results is one of the definitions of insanity. The NAIFA-Wisconsin board had to make this decision based on declining membership numbers and declining revenue. So has NAIFA, but on a much larger scale. This is one of the issues we will be voting on.

As to the rest of the issues, since our Wisconsin delegation was not able to participate in this process on a national level last fall, I believe it is imperative that you plan to attend the Congressional Conference/Pseudo National Conference. Typically we arrive on Tuesday afternoon and hear legislators, our Government Relations team and NAIFA leaders discuss issues and then on Wednesday morning, we ascend to the Hill.

I don’t think that part will change much, but holding the General Session and voting on the proposed changes will take place on Tuesday morning, so I hope you will consider coming in on Monday as the NAIFA board will be holding a Q&A session on Monday afternoon. If you wish to have knowledge and input in the process, you need to be there early. Frankly, you just need to be there. These are the most radical changes that I have ever seen or been a part of in my 32 years as a NALU/NAIFA member. NAIFA has always been a grass roots organization since its inception as NALU in 1890. Here we are, 228 years later, rewriting the entire organization.

For over 33 years, NAIFA-Wisconsin had a full 100% voting delegation in attendance at the National Convention. Years in which we elected three National Presidents from Wisconsin: Mike Nicholson, Dick Koob and Juli McNeely. What a proud tradition. We are still allowed 42 votes, so your attendance is important. Please consider attending the Congressional Conference and the postponed National Conference. NAIFA’s future is in your hands.

See you there?
